Handling Sage HRMS initialization errors

Initialization errors in Sage HRMS can happen for a variety of reasons, including updates and privileges associated with Microsoft Windows and your local machine. Here's how to handle a couple of initialization errors that we frequently get contacted by customers to resolve.

Error: "There was an error initializing Sage HRMS"

Step 1 Resolution:

  1. Access the Sage HRMS windows Server install location
  2. Open the HRMS 'CLIENT' folder
  3. Run the Sage HRMS CLIENT SETUP.MSI file
  4. The .MSI file will allow the client setup to install

If the step 1 resolution above doesn't resolve, proceed to Step 2 below.

Step 2 Resolution::

  1. Upon the HRMS User machine: Access the Windows Sage HRMS Client installation 'SAGE' folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage)
  2. Verify that the folder Securities shows 'SYSTEM/Administrator and Administrators'
  3. Push all folder permissions down to all Child objects

If the issue continues to persist, proceed to Step 3 below.

Step 3 Resolution:

  1. Upon the users machine, access Windows: Start, All Programs, Sage, Sage HRMS Client
  2. Right Click upon Sage HRMS Client executable and Select: Properties
  3. Click the 'Advanced' button on the 'SHORTCUT' tab
  4. Check the Box 'Run as Administrator' and Click 'Ok'
  5. Click 'Ok' to exit the Sage HRMS Client Properties box

Error: "There was an error Initializing Sage HRMS: Object reference not set to an instance of an Object."

This error can be caused by UAC disabling HRMS operation or due to the HRMS client not running and should appear like the image below. Here's how to resolve.

Resolution Option 1: Disable UAC

Resolution Option 2:  Run program as Administrator

  1. Navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage\Sage HRMS Client
  2. Right-Click upon ‘AbraHRMS.exe’ and select ‘Properties’
  3. Click upon the ‘Compatibility’ tab
  4. Locate ‘Privilege Level’ and Select ‘Run this Program as an Administrator’
  5. Click ‘Apply’
  6. Click ‘Ok’ to Exit

Resolution Option 3: Run the HRMS Client ‘Only’ under ‘Administrator’ Privileges

  1. Right-Click upon the Windows Desktop and Select: New, Shortcut
  2. Enter the following within the ‘Location Field’: C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:Domain\UserName /savecred "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage\Sage HRMS Client\"


  • Please utilize a Windows User Name with Administrator privileges in place of ‘UserName’ in the string above
  • Upon utilization of this shortcut, the user will be prompted to enter the login password for the Windows account in use
  • The password will only need to be entered once on each of the HRMS User machines
  • If the Password is changed for the Windows account utilized, you will need to enter the new password for each of the HRMS user machines as well
