Migrate a BusinessWorks Server

SOLVED

Hi there.

I am trying to move a Sage BusinessWorks server (2016 I believe) from one domain to another (we purchased a company and need to keep their BW system around for historical data).  The IP address has changed as we use a different IP scheme but the server name can remain the same.

How can I make this work without reinstalling BW?  Or is that the only option?

If I have to reinstall are we losing all of the data?  Or is the solution here to reinstall BW then do an export of the data from the original domain followed by an import?

Thank you for your time and help

    Marissa-

There is a Knowledge Base article that gives you the specific steps for moving to a new server - How to move the current version of Sage BusinessWorks Accounting to a new server or location (51648) .  This does require you to do an install on the new server.  You can then restore BW backups (system and data) to "move" the data to the new server.  The Knowledge Base article above gives you step by step instructions to move to the new server and specific instructions for the workstations to see the new server.

    Thanks,

    1. What is the environment the BW server is running on? Server 2003 / 2008 / 2012 / 2016  or Windows 7/8/10

2.Have you tried installing the "client" on a PC in the new domain, to gain access to the BW data?   there is a share usually called SAGE and 2 folders under it, called BWProg and BWData - look for \CLIENT SETUP and the autorun.exe --NOTE: these are the default folder names but can be different do to installers changing the names.

3.Can you log in the the BW "server" desktop and run BW client at the server and get at the correct data? - I say server, be it a Windows box or Windows Server

PS  - Read all of the KB that Coleen has pointed out

Marissa Van Opens - Since you also mentioned changing the IP, you also may also want to review Knowledge Base article #19878 How to reconfigure after changing the server name, domain, or IP address (19878).   Although these instructions are similar to what you do when you move to a new server, I thought you may want to review this as well.

    Thanks,

Thank you Coleen.  I'm going to try to find and review that one next.

    Vince:

    1) Server 2012 R2

    2) Yes and we looked at BWServer.ini and I think changed it the server address and maybe tinkered with the host name a bit.  I don't think we've looked at the Client Setup or autorun.exe files

    3) I don't think the client is currently installed on the server but again I'm not positive.

Thank you both for your help.  On to a different fire before I can loop back to this.

I feel like this is now doomed to fail.  The way I think they configured this application is that they installed PervasiveSQL on this server, then installed the client on Citrix servers then used those to connect to the SQL instance...maybe, no one knows how it was initially set up.

If I try and install the Profile client on the server I get an error stating that "Sage BusinessWorks installation originally preformed by User Administrator in this computer is version 2015.  This profile installation is version 2013.  Brows to the Sage BusinessWorks program folder and run BWprofile.exe from there."

If I do that I get the same error.

I would presume that I could just create a new server then try and do a new installation there.  Then because I have access to the old server still get someone with access to export my backup of the data.

Look up in the KB for how to install on a Citrix server, give yourself a little time and info.  I've run BW on an applications server for 20 years but not Citrix.

    Good Luck

As Vince mentioned there are specific instructions for the terminal server environment - How to install the current version of Sage BusinessWorks Accounting on a terminal server (51644) .  I would review that along with the KB Moving to a new server.  If you follow those instructions, that cleans up your .ini settings as well and make sure everyone is pointing to one server - the new server (or new IP).  If you continue to have issues, then you may want to call 800-447-5700 or set up a case to work with Support Analyst to discuss your install and the issues you are having.

    Thanks,

I got it working, not on Citrix yet but I could connect to it from another server/client.

Thank you both for your help.  The Terminal Server guide helped me out quite a bit.  A colleague tried to install the Client piece on a separate server initially but it failed.  I was able to use the TS guide to figure out the order of install (Pervasive Client, BW Client).

From there it was just a little nudging to get things to work correctly (adding users to the Administrators directly...domain Admins didn't work for me for some reason).

    Have a great weekend.
