Setting up a consolidation account

When setting up a consolidation account, doe sit have to be new account, or can it be an existing posting account (with a .000 extension).

    No, you cannot change the Account class on an existing posting account to a consolidation account.  If you need to "make room" for the Consolidating account, see Knowledge Base article ID: 26673  How to change the Account Type or Account Class of a general ledger account number .    This article will give you instructions to "rename" which is really renumbering the existing posting account to another GL number.  Then you can create your Consolidating account reusing the original number.  Other articles your may want to review are:  ID: 19016 How do I renumber a General Ledger account   and ID: 59287 How to set up consolidation account  .
