crexcel_en.xla could not be found

Posted By Anonymous

Upgraded a client from v4.3 to v4.4 Service Pack 2.  Installed Crystal reports 11.

When the open a file in Excel they get the error message.

C:\program files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.5\bin\crexcel_en.xla could not be found.  Check the spelling of the file name and verify that the file location is correct.  If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.

This only happens on one workstation and I have not been able to do any checking because they are out of town and would like it fixed when they get back.

Thank you in advance.

  • Sounds as if you uninstalled Crystal 10 which was still being used (at least the Excel add-in).  There is no XI equivalent. See their KBase Article ID:c2017075.  You can have both versions (10 and XI) installed together if you need the add-in.

Instead of re-installling version 10, can I just copy that file into the folder and go into Excel and click on Tools...Add ins and install it?

  • I would expect that the version 10 add-in has dependancies on version 10 COM objects that may not exist in XI.

  • Interesting.  Never realized crystall had any add in functionality with Excel.

Looking in my Excel 2007,  I see and INACTIVE add-in for Crystal Reports SmartTagRecognizer 11.5 (whatever that is).  However, I don't see how you activate or inactive it.  Prior versions of Excel had check boxes to turn them on and off.

If you can figure out how to turn it on and off in Excel, I suspect you will have your resolution.

In Excel, Clicked on Tools...Add Ins... and unchecked the box for Crystal Reports Wizard 10 and no more error.

They will not be writing Crystal reports from within Excel.
