Using Two Computers

Hello! I recently installed a 2-User License Sage Premium 2011 on my office computer and the other on my laptop (so I can continue to work at home).  I had no problems installing on both. The first time I did a restore from a backup onto my laptop, it worked and everything went smoothly.  The second time I tried to restore from the same backup onto my laptop, I keep getting this popup message: The file cannot be restored to the selected derectory because you do not have write permissions for this directory.  Browse to select a different directory, or contact your system administrator for assistance.

I also keep getting this popup message: Sage Simply Accounting cannot open the database because some database files are read-only.  Please ensure you have sufficient rights to the files, then try again.

How can I get my backups from my office computer to work with my laptop? I tried to change some of my user settings but it didn't work.

All replies are greatly appreciated!

    Hi dee_lovely88,

Make sure when you are restoring your backup you are not restoring the file to a folder you don't have write permissions to.  For example, if you are moving the file from a XP computer to a Vista/7 computer, you will not be able to restore the backup to C:\program files or c:\documents and settings.  When you are restoring your backup, on the fourth screen that says 'Company File Name' at the top, click on the [Browse] button and choose your documents folder and see if the file will restore there.

    Hope this helps!

  •  Thanks so much! Your reply worked.

So in the future when I back up from my laptop and want to put the back up into my office computer, will it cause the same problem because my laptop is Window 7 and the one in the office is an XP? If so, can I do the same as what you had stated above?

    Thanks!

I would suggest saving it to a new folder on the C:\ drive on both computers (ie. C:\simply accounting data), and that folder will work on both computers.

I am doing the same sort of thing as this thread.... What confuses me, is that Simply asks for a new file name each time I restore. Will that not get confusing when opening your program each day? Before trying to backup, restore on different computer, backup and restore on original computer, the file I opened was always the same as when I first set up the program but if I keep renaming I will end up with a long list of files to choose each time....right?

    GammaDi:

You can simply name it the same name if you wish when restoring. If you want to keep the original data file on your computer then you will have to rename it. Just remember when you give it the same name you are actually replacing the original named data file.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you.....I guess if I want to keep just one name on the computer, that is where the backups before and after are so important.  I appreciate your hlep

Absolutely, just make sure you have multiple backups in multiple locations. You are most welcome!
