Customize Timeslips Today

We have the default Timeslips today templates available.  I have TimeKeeper assigned to almost everyone.  But there are two more groups of people that I need to make customer layouts for.  When I create a new Template called ANALYST and I apply it to a specific Timekeeper, the Navigator does not display the correct Timeslips Today for ANALYST.

So I looked at making a "new" Navigator by copying the TIMEKEEPER template and renaming it ANALYST.  When I go to load the navigator ANALYST, the template is not available for selection in personal preferences for each user.

How do I get the custom navigator to show up for specific users?

Or how do I get custom TimeSlips Today views to show up for specific users?

The help for Navigator Editor is less than helpful.  And Timeslips help itself is not much more helpful.  Thanks in advance.Smile

We are setup with Timeslips running/hosting on an internal Windows 2012 server.
All users are running Windows 7 64bit with latest software patches, gigabit wired network and at least 8GB of RAM

Are there any users/admins who have attempted to do what I'm asking?

Timeslips today and navigators are two different things. Timeslips today template is assigned under special. The navigator is what you see in the boxes showing the different icons like New Slip.

Caren, so how do I go about creating a custom view for the analysts that is different than the other timekeepers?

Beyond what is in help for customizing Timeslips today you are now getting into how we as consultants make our living. I am happy to provide training but it would be fee based. There are some things that I feel are beyond a forum.

I should not have to pay for someone to explain how to change the view for two different groups when they log into Timeslips.  Group A sees the Timekeeper view.  Group B sees the Analyst view.  Customizing the layout, sure, that's worthy of paying because it's a custom solution.  But how to change the view?  That's standard functionality, or at least it should be, in Timeslips.

Would I pay for someone to teach me how to change the view in Outlook to show the preview pane or to turn it off?  No.  It's simply a function of the software.  And surely a simple answer for forum members.

Perhaps Timeslips doesn't make it simple.  And if that's the case, fine.  Say so.  I will simply mark this experience down as another reason to move away from this software.  Frustrated is not nearly strong enough expression.

In my prior post I told you how to change Timeslips Today views. It is under special - timeslips today. There is also the help file.

You asked how to you customize, not how do you assign. Since I had previously answered how do you assign I feel my answer was appropriate.

Most of the answers on this forum come from consultants like myself who volunteer our time to help. This is not something we are paid to do. We take time out of our schedules to try to help.

    Quoting from the Help file.

    "Assigning Timeslips Today templates

After creating new Timeslips Today templates, you can assign them to navigators or to the appropriate timekeepers.

If you use Timeslips Today within an enhanced navigator, you can use the Navigator Settings dialog box to choose which Timeslips Today template to use.

If you use Timeslips Today as a stand-alone dialog box, you can use the Assign Timeslips Today Templates dialog box to assign Timeslips Today templates to each timekeeper."

Please advise which of these you are trying to do, as it is not clear from your posts.  Are you trying to embed them in an enhanced navigator?  Or use them as a stand-alone?

Also, which version of Timeslips are you using?

Nancy, I saw your presentation last week at the ABA Tech Show and didn't get a chance to talk to you between sessions.

We are using Timeslips 2015.  We are using Enhanced navigator.  It automatically opens up our TimeSlips today, on the left side, to the Timekeeper.TST.

Using Navigator Editor I see that we are using the OfficeManager.NVG layout, which has not been modified.

When timeslips opens up, I'm presented with the TimeSlips Today which uses the Timekeeper.TST which I mentioned before.  So I made a copy of Timekeeper.TST and modified the bottom right quadrant and saved the TST as Analyst.TST.

If I click on CHANGE SETTINGS, (lower left corner of the navigator) I can make changes to the TST and save them. Cool.

If I click on CHANGE TEMPLATE, I can change template underneath the ENHANCED MODE to OFFICE MANAGER, TIMEKEEPER, BUSINESS OWNER, or TUTORIAL.  This is where I would like to change who can see what, as this appears to be saved in the user preferences.  Most users on TIMEKEEPER template and a few others on ANALYST template.

Awe bummer tmartincps, it would have been great to chat with you there.  Next time for sure!

Now, as to tweaking the Navigators.  I don't do much of that, but I know it can be done. Whenever a client wants to make changes, I have to go back and relearn how to do it. Timeslips Today and the Navigators are sort of two separate things, but the Navigators do have some Timeslips Today features in them, so they are more of a blend.  I think you are needing to look at editing the NAVIGATOR that the analysts pull up, and not the Timeslips Today template.  You can only use one of the four named ones.  So you will need to edit an existing or save over an existing to modify one of the four.

It really depends what your goal is.  Because you COULD for example set the Analysts to have NO Navigator at all, and ONLY open your new Analyst.TST on start up. Would that be just as good for you?

    Hope this helps.

If you think this suggestion was especially helpful, please consider rating it within the five star option, or clicking the green Yes button next to the "Did this answer your question?" option below.  Thanks.
