Help diagnosing TimeSlip Error Code: 11

Hi,

I'm a new user looking for some assistance with a Timeslips error.

I have a client that is having problems opening their timeslips DB.  They called me in today to take a look and I tried to run the verification to correct the error.

Here are the details of the error on the screen:

Version: 11.0.0.18

Table: General Settings

Record: 10

Field: Settings

BDE Code: 0

Area: Table

Code: 11

Based on some reading I tried deleting the necessary .net and .lck folders but that hasn't resolved the issue.

The dberrlog.txt file has similar to above but also included the following:

"Attempted to read corrupted data.  Use the repair Errors option in Data Verification to attempt a repair"

Any help would be appreciated

Joe

Timeslips v11 is very old and they really should be looking to upgrade. Aside from that they don't have the service releases for v11 installed.

Generally speaking the error you are getting is not hard to fix, assuming it is not hiding other errors. However, it is not something you can fix yourself. Since it is an unsupported version you will need to work with a certified consultant that has data repair tools to assist you. Most of us can work remotely so you can reach out to me, Nancy, Allen or one of the others that frequents this board. If you prefer someone local let us know where you are located and we can try to recommend someone.

Thank you Caren for your prompt response.

Can you please help be understand what you mean by "not something you can fix yourself"?   I'm confident that I have the technical experience including BDE, but I don't know if you are making reference to proprietary repair tools.  Feel free to contact me on PM if need be so we could discuss services and I will discuss with my client.

    Thanks!!

Dowop, we call this kind of thing Data Repair, and none of us do it for free.

I don't want to sound cheeky, but I do want to address why Caren, myself, and the other Certified Consultants sometimes do not simply dole out endless advise on certain topics here in the free forum.  While we are happy to provide quick answers to FAQ's and help users understand how the program works so that they can take advantage of features, there comes a point where we would be required to go beyond that sort of entry level advice, and for that we charge for our expertise.

Data Repair requires not only knowledge of things like BDE and the tools we use to access the database to do the repair, but also knowledge about HOW to do the repair.  Things like which records need to be adjusted, which are safe to change and which should not be modified.  Data Repair is THE most complex consulting that I do.  My ability to do it quickly, and reliably is the cumulative of 20+ years consulting on Timeslips. To get to that level of expertise takes a lot of time and effort, as you yourself know if you are claiming confidence in your own expertise.

You're not paying to have us actually perform the repair in your place, you are paying for our knowledge, expertise and experience with doing data repair.  Just as I'm sure your own clients pay you for the same.

It has nothing to do with your own level of prowess, and everything to do with our own.

    Hope this helps.

    Nancy,

I completely understand what it means to be a consultant and maintaining proficiency and expertise in your subject area(s).  This is a very secure enterprise/client with no outside connectivity for RDP and the like, so I was trying to understand how one will attempt to repair remotely unless it is done through myself or someone in my consulting firm.

Please PM so we can continue with this discussion.

    Thanks,

    Joe

Ahhh, I see now what you meant.  Yes, it will be a bit difficult without internet access to the database.  Might need to copy it to a machine that does have access.

There or tools that we use to fix it which you do not have and I cannot give to you. They involve tools that open up and read the internals of the database
