Inventory

It appears that that the GL account for inventory is somehow secretly tied to the inventory module. I see no location to tell the system what account to use for inventory recording. I would like to have control to set different inventory locations to pull costs from different GL accounts. Is this possible or too much to ask for in the next release?

    Hello Tom

You can add different inventory locations at menu 11-3.  But you are correct, the inventory module is only tied to one inventory GL account.  Can you explain why you would want separate GL accounts?  You can run various reports by location already to get values.

Because the only way to allocate material to a job is if the material has a part number and is a "stock item". We have 2 inventory accounts. One is the module GL 1299, "parts" and one is a general inventory GL 1231 that has material that is not identified by part numbers. The only way to get material from the 1231 account to a job is via a journal transaction. Allowing access to the general ledger is not something I like to do. If there was a security "write only" function on the 1-3 screen that would be great but there isn't.

So Sage support has no solution and having heard no one on this thread come up with a solution to Sages' limited account options for inventory allocation I think this is my fix. We will do a journal transaction of 10000 "parts" at $1.00 each from account 1231 which is one of our inventory accounts to 1299 which is the default unchangeable Sage inventory account. That way a user can do the allocation without having GL access. Anybody see a problem with this?
