Account Reconciliation of Credit Cards

SOLVED

We recently set up two new, MasterCard credit cards, one for each owner, and I guess I'm now wondering how to reconcile the credit cards.

I do the account reconciliation for our chequing account without issue, however, credit cards do not seem to be as straightforward.

We have received our first MasterCard statement and I guess I was expecting a separate statement for each MasterCard. Instead what I have received is one statement with a summary itemizing: (i) the opening balance, (ii) the purchases/returns, and (iii) the final, new balance owing.

On page 2 of the MasterCard statement, there is detail given for the section 'purchases/returns' and those items are 'grouped' according to the MasterCard owner.

So instead it would seem I should do an account reconciliation for the one statement??? (Basically ignoring the fact that we have two credit cards?)

My questions are:

  1. Maybe I'm completely barking up the wrong tree--do I even do an account rec for the MasterCard(s)?
  2. If I do do an account rec, do I do that on the account "2134 MasterCard Payable"?
  3. Maybe I should not have set the MasterCards up per owner? That is, just have ONE MasterCard (basically assuming that whichever owner uses their credit card is in essence, not relevant?)

I'm hoping there is someone here who can get me started by pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Kristine

it sounds like you have one mastercard account, with two cards

if so, you would set up one gl payable account, and check 'save transactions for account rec'

    Hi Roger,

Yes, that is correct... one MasterCard account with two cards.

I have one payable account set up right now and that is "2134 MasterCard Payable" and I will select the "Save transactions for account reconciliation" check box.

After sleeping on it ad thinking about it, I think I'll be okay... I was just expecting to receive separate statements for each credit card and that threw me off since this is my first time handling credit cards. I think I get it now that it doesn't really matter how many credit cards or credit card accounts you have, because in the end it's the MasterCard Payable account that is reconciled.

Thanks for getting back to me!

if you have multiple credit card accounts (ie multiple statements) - you should set up one gl payable account for each one

Hi Roger - I have only ONE statement so I guess just ONE corresponding payable account... but for future reference, should we end up with another statement then I should create another corresponding, payable account. Of course that will also mean I will need to be able to differentiate the two payable accounts.

So for the one, payable account I currently have set up as "2134 MasterCard Payable" I think I am going to re-name it to "2134 MasterCard Payable 1234" where 1234 are the last four digits of our account number. Is that what people typically do?

    Thanks,
