Assigning serial numbers to Assemblies

I am using Sage 300 ERP. I am trying to assign serial numbers to components and Master items in BOMs.  I cannot assign serial numbers in inventory, as I do not know the serial number of the item I am selling until I prepare the sales order.  But once I designate an item as using a serial number (in I/C items) when I go to assemble the BOM, it only lets me select method "None", which then does not assemble subcomponents, and then I don't have sufficient quantity to assemble the Master item.

When/where is the best time/place to assign a serial number if you do not use allocated or auto generated serial numbers, and do not have the serial numbers available ahead of time, and are working with assembled items wherein both a component and a Master each have a separate serial number to be assigned?

"...which then does not assemble subcomponents..."

I don't think you can enter a multilevel, cascading BOM in one entry in Sage 50 Canadian.

The Sage serial number design seems to have these assumptions:

Sales Orders are for inventory that may not yet exist, so you can't choose serial numbers.

BOMs and Assemblies are one level, subassemblies require their own BOM, and they have to be entered in sequence.

Invoice serial numbers are assigned after picking, when the serial numbers are chosen from inventory that has been built.

It's possible to enter the data in Sage 50 along the way, but it's not an MRP or ERP system.  You can have an open sales order for 1000 finished assemblies, and your below order quantity report will only tally up how many finished assemblies you have on hand and on other orders, then do the math on that one item.

If you need more sophistication, you may want to look at addons such as MISYS, or other software that supports the business process better.

Or, you could post this question in the appropriate Sage 300 forum, since Sage's goofy website dumped your post in the Sage 50 Canadian forum.
