Sage 50 Pro Bought early August & requested the CD backup - They Differ.

SOLVED

I bought Sage 50 PRO 2014 (Canadian Edition) over the telephone and received the confirmation and download on line.  I had concerns about a seamless transition of old data as the version being used before was very old - 2006 Basic.  So, I had requested they send the CD and I did not activate the original received program on my main Desktop until such time as I received the CD.  On receiving the CD I installed Sage 50 on my Laptop.  It accepted old Backups of Simply Accounting 2006 Basic and upgraded to the new version.  So, I used my main desktop and converted all my 2006 version files for 2 different companies, including my current year.

My Backup procedure is to use a FlashDrive and periodically restore it to my Laptop to be doubly sure I don't lose any data.  The first time I try to do that with my current company data, the laptop won't take the restore and I get an error message that it was created with a later version of the program.  Come to realize the version I was sent on line was Sage 50 PRO 2014 Version 14.3            The CD they sent me was Version 14.1           Since the first CD requested was never received, they sent another along with a postal tracking number and it was received no problem.  In case of any problems with the 14.3 version I'm using, the back-up CD I have would be useless to reinstall the program.

With no employees or payroll and minimal activity in the companies I administer, I had no need for frequent updates as I didn't need payroll updates or other minor changes.  As well I saw no need to sign up for the support service.  As hard as it is to believe, in requesting they forward another CD that is Version 14.3, the answer is NO.  They claim to already have sent me 2 CD's (that cost $15 each) and will not send a third.  Further, this contact advises that if they did send another CD it would still be Version 14.1.  Why ?

If anyone has had a similar experience I'd dearly love to hear about how it was resolved.  Or, any suggestions about how to get around the issue, other than sign up for their expensive troubleshooting service, would be appreciated.

My Backup procedure is to use a FlashDrive and periodically restore it to my Laptop to be doubly sure I don't lose any data.  The first time I try to do that with my current company data, the laptop won't take the restore and I get an error message that it was created with a later version of the program.

Your laptop could be version 2014.1 or 2014.2.  If licenced and internet-connected, you can download and install 2014.3 on it.   If not internet-connected, copy the contents of the c:\SAGE  folder (the installation folder) to a USB key, or burn it to the root of a DVD or CD (if it fits), and install on the laptop.

It wouldn't be useless, but it would two steps:

     - Install and register

     - Check for updates and install.

Again, if you make a copy of the installation folder, you'll have a copy of what you downloaded and installed.   For that matter, you'll have it if you copy the download to a memory stick.  (was always c:\sage up to 2013, now it's elsewhere - the downloads folder?

Further, this contact advises that if they did send another CD it would still be Version 14.1.  Why ?

I don't work there, but I'm guessing that's the only version they stamped / burned onto CDs.  They probably ran off a stack last fall, and none since.

They may have the updates on CD, but they would be identical to what you downloaded / what the program downloads when you update it.

I want to sincerely thank Randy W.  You were bang on the money.  I had also contacted Sage 50 support and they explained basically the  same thing.  They also agreed if I had bought the store version of the program and installed from the CD on both computers, it wouldn't have been a problem.  I had never previously understood why my backups couldn't be restored on my laptop.......all due to having different versions on the 2 computers.  I'll toss the CD and just keep the Flash Drive copy on my Sage file.

    Thanks again.

All worked fine for a couple of years.  Same 2 computers, same Win 7 version, same Sage version on both computers. But, I restored laptop with Flash Drive Backup and went south for the winter and did regular journal entries.  First couple of times Backups from Laptop to same Flash Drive worked.  Then it stopped working during the backup on 1 company (but a 2nd company was still okay and backing up fine).  During the backup an error messages says Sage50 (0041-rel\2014.3) has stopped working for this company.. "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".  I closed the program.  Fooling with it looking for a solution, I lost the previous backup that was on the same Flash Drive".  Reading other solutions, I have only backed up to the Flash Drive, never to the SAJ file and can find no "Backup" files in there.  I am still able to make journal entries into the laptop but can't up-date the backup to now restore back to my home desktop.  This problem started in mid-January not long after my Sage account manager was trying to sell me an updated version of Sage.  I don't need updates, no longer any payroll entries, etc.   Do I need to buy a new version of Sage that I can install on both desktop and laptop ?  Or what do I do ?

The first thing I would try is a new flash drive.  16 GB was $7 last time I was at the store.  If the backup doesn't work with a new flash drive for some reason, File | Save As should still work.

Sage doesn't recommend opening a company file on a flash drive, because some flash drives may have encryption or odd filesystems that can make it not work or cause data loss, or may just plain fail to store the data in a number of ways.

If you're using Sage 50 Canadian 2014.x (or any version of what used to be Simply Accounting, there may be additional backups or other copies on your hard drive from starting a new yearend or running the Advanced Database Check, or Clearing data.  ( usually under the 'Public' or 'Documents' folders. )
