Slow payroll cheque printing

I have been frustrated by the slow printing of payroll cheques all year with SA 2008, but today I had to reprint, so it took more than twice as long.

When printing one cheque at a time, it takes 1 1/2 minutes from the time I press Print until it gets sent to the printer. Spooling and printing time is in addition to this. Printing a payroll cheque run takes a similar time just multiplied by the number of cheques before printing.

Printing payment cheques does not have this kind of delay.

The computer is a Pentium 4 with 2 GB of RAM running Windows XP.

Does anyone else experience this kind of delay?

Any suggestions to improve this?

I have seen this happen with a few clients. It seems to be related to print drivers and/or the form selection.

Version 2008 tries to configure the print layout to the printer chosen. If there is a problem with the drivers, you will experience slow printing as well as slow report displays.

As a test, add a new generic test printer - from Windows Desktop - Start>Printers & Faxes>Add New Printer - follow the Windows wizard and choose the Generic/Text Only Printer and install it (you can delete it later).

Then run a payroll cheque with the Generic printer as the chosen Payroll Cheque printer. If it prints 'instantly', go back and look at the original printer that is slow. You may need to upgrade the driver. Also, check all of the advanced settings for the printer to make sure that those settings are not unusual.

One other question - what type of form are you using for the payroll cheque?

  • Brent,

    Thanks for the try.

I get the same results with a generic printer through a USB port, the HP printer through a USB port or the HP printer through a network port (the usual configuration).

A payroll cheque takes about 95 seconds before it gets to the printer.

A payment cheque  gets to the printer almost instantly.

The cheques are the same for both, a preprinted cheque using 8 1/2 x 11 Easy Align, Arial 10.

While waiting the 95 seconds, CPU usage is 100%; 85 to 90% is mysqld-nt.exe. Does this provide a clue?
