Setting up new accounts

Hello, I am taking over a set of books with no back-up, so I have opened a new company and set all the accounts up according to their last chart of accounts. However when I am finished setting up all the accounts, and went to make some adjustments and add some balances, I get a message that says:

In the general module the total debits exceeds the total credits for $(the amount of balance I am trying to put)

I don't understand why this started happening after I have all these accounts set-up and now I can't even add an account or edit one, any suggestions??
