Deleting transactions in an account so that the account can be removed from the Chart of Accounts

I am trying to delete an account I created where I accidentally transposed the numbers and now my accounts are "not in logical order".  I posted a payment using this account before I realized my error, and reversed the transaction, but there is a warning which comes up saying the account can't be deleted because there are transactions in the account. Help?  I did try to just change the number of the account to correct it, but the option is greyed out and I can't change the account number from the wrong one to the correct one.

Does anyone have any suggestions or is able to help?  Thanks in advance.

'deleting' a transaction actually just creates another 'reversing' transaction, which the software considers to be a reason that you have to keep the account until after two year ends have gone by, and is also the reason that you can change the account number.

The account can't be deleted or made inactive, however you can change the name of the account to something like 'ZZZ - DO NOT USE', and set it to not appear in reports if there is no balance.

If you have access to a Sage Accountants' Network member, they will have the 'Accountants Edition' of Sage 50 which can force changes to account numbers, and merge G/L account data together.

Thank you for the suggestion, I called our accountant and they fixed it over the phone.  The Heading account needed to be renumbered and then I could change the account type, and then marked it do not use as you suggested.

You can not delete an account that has transactions. This one currently has the original entry, and then the reversal. The option to change the account number may be grey out because you do not have permission under your user name to change the number, you are in multi-user mode, or there are other Sage50 windows open.
