Bank Reconciliation - Opening Balance

Hi all.  I have started a new job and we are using Sage 300 ERP 2014 Edition.  They have never used the bank reconciliation feature.  I would like to begin to use it but unsure how to start with the correct opening balance.  I have read other forums and I am pretty sure I can tackle it but want some confirmation before I do.

In the reconciliation tab with the outstanding cheques, there are about 6 years worth of cheques.  I was thinking I would select them all with the 'Quick Clearing' and then go back and 'deselect' the 8 or so that are in fact still outstanding.

However, I cannot balance as no deposits have been entered using the 'bank entry' method.  Can I at this point enter a 'bank entry' and do a deposit to this bank account to match to make my opening balance what I in fact want it to be?

If this is correct - this is where I am a little confused.  One forum says 'do not post the GL batch' and the other says post it so it is able to be traced.  What will this entry do to my GL?  I feel like by doing a deposit entry I am in fact debiting and crediting the same account so should have no effect on my GL balances.

I would like to begin doing deposits and transfers through the Bank Rec module effective February 1st so want to get it cleared up quickly.  Thanks for any input!! :)
