Sage 100 Accounting (Formerly MAS 90 / MAS 200) does not require the use of a hosted environment. You may load it locally to your own server or there are numerous third-party hosts who are available.

So far asI'm aware Sage doesn't have a formal recommended cloud provider list. It's best to select a provider with significant experience with Sage 100.

To answer your question, it does need a hosted cloud server.

You can put your servers in the local premise or buy a desktop license for Sage 100. But, when Sage 100 is hosted on the cloud, there are some advantages that come with it.

Like one can access data files easily from any location anytime. Data security is always intact on the files. In addition to it, the files are always protected from any disasters due to the fact that the cloud creates a backup of the data files and stores them in other data centers located in multiple geographical locations.

Sage 100 has no true SAAS option so "cloud" here simply means a server located in a data center instead of on premise.  Technically the only difference is where the server is located and how you connect with it.  A lot of data center service providers bundle support and backups, but that is something you pay for and trust them to do well.

If your internet connection is not steady / reliable, an on premise server allows you to continue working with Sage 100 (for almost everything) while the internet is down.
