How do I post an adjustment to an account on my chart of accounts but not accessible in the General Journal? It is a liability account.

SUGGESTED

I have a Deposit received account on my chart of accounts but it won't let me post a Year End adjustment to it..

What am I missing?

Sounds like 'Deposit received' is a linked account, probably for your accounts receivable module.  You can easily figure this out by creating a General Journal entry and looking up the account - if it is blue in the account lookup screen, then it is a linked account that you will only post to in very unusual circumstances.

Usually, you do not want to post General Journal entries to any of the 'blue' accounts unless your 'Data integrity check' shows problems.

So, first step is to run a data integrity check.  If all items are listed as "OK", then you should NOT post the entry you've been given as a General Journal entry.  You should contact your year-end accountant for further details - specifically "It looks like this needs to be entered through Accounts Receivable... please give me detailed instructions including the customer name(s) affected".

If there is a problem in Data Integrity Check relating to your accounts receivable, and if the entry you've been given would fix the problem, then it is OK to post the entry through the General Journal.  You will first have to unlink the Deposit received account, then post the entry, and then re-link it so your Accounts Receivable module will continue to work.

The Accountant's Edition is the only version that shows linked accounts in the General Journal in Blue.  Other versions of Pro, Premium and Quantum do not show them at all.  The only place to see linked accounts in those versions is under the Setup, Settings menu in the appropriate module.

Thanks, Richard.  I knew you couldn't post to the 'blue' accounts in any version other than Accountants Version, but I didn't realize they were hidden completely!
